The dues receipt that repeats your T4

Compare your T4 and membership receipt so eligible annual dues are claimed once and excluded fees stay out.

A union receipt compared with a payroll slip.

A union receipt arriving after your T4 may document the same dues already shown in box 44. Adding both amounts without comparing them can double the claim.

Start with a small reconciliation: the amount deducted through payroll, the amount paid directly, the period each payment covers and any employer payment. Keep both documents, even when they describe the same total.

Identify the type of fee

Line 21200 covers qualifying annual union, professional or similar dues. Examples include annual dues needed to maintain membership in a trade union and qualifying professional dues required under provincial or territorial law.

A professional-looking invoice can contain several different charges. Initiation fees, special assessments, licences and charges for benefits do not automatically qualify as annual dues. Ask the organization for a breakdown when a renewal bundles membership, insurance, training and other services.

A voluntary networking club is not made deductible merely by including your occupation in its name. Likewise, an employer's preference that you join an association does not settle every legal requirement for this deduction.

Account for employer-paid amounts

Check whether your employer paid or reimbursed the fees and how that payment was treated on your T4. The CRA permits qualifying employer-paid dues included in your income, subject to the applicable rules. Do not claim an amount simply because a receipt is addressed to you when you did not bear the cost or include the benefit in income.

Leave a clear trail

Keep the receipt, payroll evidence and any fee breakdown. If the T4 amount appears wrong, ask payroll to review it rather than inventing an offset elsewhere in the return.

For a straightforward example, $720 on the T4 and a union receipt confirming that same $720 represent one payment total, not $1,440. A separate eligible direct payment needs its own evidence before being added.
