A T4A can report several kinds of income, including pensions, scholarships and fees for services. Receiving one does not mean every amount belongs in a freelance business calculation.
Start with the box number and description. Then compare the payment with the activity that produced it.
Read the box, not just the heading
Fees for services in box 048 generally belong in the relevant self-employment reporting. Other T4A boxes have different instructions. A pension amount and a contractor fee should not be treated alike simply because they share the same slip format.
For a genuine business, reconcile the slip with invoices and records. If the same $2,000 fee is already included in recorded revenue, entering the T4A must not add a second $2,000. A difference between invoices and a payer's slip needs an explanation, including timing where relevant, rather than an unexplained adjustment.
Review the actual relationship
A contract calling someone an independent contractor is not conclusive. The CRA considers the actual facts, including control over work, tools, financial risk and opportunity for profit. The applicable legal framework also matters; Quebec's approach differs from the common-law analysis used in Ontario.
Keep the agreement, instructions, invoices and payment records. These help describe how the arrangement operated beyond its label.
Resolve a mismatch with evidence
If the slip appears incorrect, ask the issuer to review it. Where employment status is uncertain, a worker or payer can request a CPP/EI ruling from the CRA. That is a defined process, not a reason to choose whichever tax treatment produces the lower bill.
Do not ignore income while discussing a correction. Record what was received, what was reported and what remains unresolved so the return can be prepared on a supportable basis.
