The rent was paid. Sophie still needed one slip.

Find the housing details that belong in a Quebec solidarity-credit claim, including a missing RL-31, roommates and a move during the year.

Sophie takes an envelope from her mailbox in a Montreal apartment building.

Sophie had twelve rent transfers and a very good memory of paying them. Her tax software wanted something else: the dwelling number from an RL-31 slip.

She nearly entered her apartment number. It fitted the little box beautifully. It was also the wrong number.

For the housing component of Quebec's solidarity tax credit, a tenant's RL-31 supplies specific occupancy information. It is not an income slip, and the housing component is not calculated by simply refunding a percentage of all rent paid.

Start with the right home and year

For a 2025 return, the relevant housing situation is the one on December 31, 2025. A tenant or subtenant of an eligible dwelling uses the dwelling number in box A and the number of tenants or subtenants in box B of the RL-31 when completing Schedule D. An owner uses the municipal tax bill's roll number or cadastral designation instead. Revenu Québec's housing-component instructions.

Sophie moved in July. She put both leases in her file, but identified the December address before opening the software. That avoids using a slip from a former home merely because it arrived first.

An eligible dwelling generally has to be your principal residence in Quebec. Exclusions include certain subsidized accommodation, institutional housing and some rooms in a landlord's home. Paying rent alone does not establish eligibility. Check the eligible-dwelling definition for your arrangement.

If the slip is missing, ask for the actual slip

The landlord must provide an RL-31 to each qualifying tenant or subtenant at the year-end date. Revenu Québec's 2025-return guidance says to contact the landlord if it has not arrived by mid-March 2026, then contact Revenu Québec if you cannot obtain it.

A useful message identifies the tax year, rental address and your name as it appears on the lease. Ask for a copy or a correction, as appropriate. Keep the reply. Do not invent box A from the street number, reuse last year's slip without checking, or substitute the annual rent total.

Check the household information too

Sophie and her unrelated roommate compared the lease and the slips. If the tenant count or identifying details seemed wrong, their next step was to ask the landlord to explain or correct the record. They did not each change the count to one because they filed separate returns.

Sophie and her roommate check their housing papers together on the sofa.
The lease and the slip answer different questions. Keep both in the housing file.

Spouses living together have a different application rule: only one completes Schedule D to claim the credit for both. Eligibility, family income and other circumstances still matter. As a rule, direct-deposit registration is required. How to claim the solidarity credit.

Already filed without the housing details?

Review the submitted Schedule D and the credit notice before starting a correction. Revenu Québec allows changes through the solidarity-credit service in My Account, or with a complete corrected Schedule D and the adjustment form. The claim has a time limit; check the instructions for the year involved.

A dwelling that does not qualify for the housing component does not automatically eliminate the other components. And a Quebec RL-31 should not be entered as though it were an Ontario rent receipt. The provinces ask different questions.

Sophie kept the envelope, the slip and the lease together. Her apartment number remained useful for deliveries. It was relieved of tax-software duties.
