The software had congratulated me. I had congratulated myself. Then I noticed the Quebec return still said it was ready to send.
I live in Gatineau, and this was my first time doing the whole job myself. I had entered our family information once and assumed the rest travelled together. My coffee was cold by the time I understood the distinction, but at least I had not put the folder away.
For a Quebec resident with a filing obligation, the usual arrangement is a federal return to the Canada Revenue Agency and a separate provincial return to Revenu Québec. The federal package for Quebec covers federal tax; the provincial return has its own calculations. One tax-software file can prepare both. It does not make them one submission. Quebec's return resources link to the two administrations.
One household folder, two destinations
I collected the slips, receipts and prior assessments in one place. Then I made two short headings in my notebook: CRA and Revenu Québec. Under each I left space for the filing confirmation, assessment and any payment.
That was an organizational choice, not a request to enter all the income twice in the software. Follow the software's instructions for linked federal and Quebec slips. Importing data is also only a starting point: compare it with the documents you received and check what is missing.
Before sending, I checked the tax year and the province of residence used by the return. A Quebec mailing address is not a substitute for reviewing residency when someone moved, left Canada or has an unusual business situation. Revenu Québec's filing-obligation guidance also covers situations beyond ordinary year-end residents.
My partner had little income that year. We still checked his filing position separately. For example, Quebec's solidarity credit and Family Allowance can require both spouses' returns. A small paycheque does not settle the question.
Look for acceptance from both places
With authorized software, the Quebec submission goes through NetFile Québec. Revenu Québec says to make sure you receive its confirmation message containing a reference number. I saved it with the federal confirmation, using filenames that included the year and the administration. Quebec online filing instructions.
CRA also tells electronic filers to keep the confirmation number for their records. If one submission succeeds and the other is rejected, deal with the rejected one; do not assume that the first confirmation covers both. CRA's filing preparation guide.
A saved draft, a completed questionnaire and an acceptance confirmation are different things. So are a confirmation and an assessment. I wanted a record of each stage, not another screenshot of a cheerful green button.

Do not reduce two balances to one payment
Here is a cash-planning example. Suppose the prepared returns show a $650 federal refund and $900 owing to Quebec. The difference is $250, but that arithmetic does not mean a $250 Quebec payment settles the $900 balance. Keep the full Quebec obligation and the expected federal receipt as separate items until the account records show otherwise.
Nor is an expected refund a promise that cash will arrive before another payment is due. Check the payment destination, tax year, account reference and applicable due date. Revenu Québec distinguishes paying a balance from receiving a refund; filing online is not itself a payment instruction.
Close the job after the assessments arrive
I now keep a small checklist for each administration: submitted return saved, acceptance saved, assessment checked, payment or refund reconciled. If a notice changes something, I compare the affected lines with the submitted version and supporting document before deciding what to do next.
The folder can go on the shelf when the work is done. It no longer goes there merely because the software was pleased with me.
Checked October 20, 2026, using the currently available 2025-return instructions. Use the forms and software authorized for the year you are filing. Next: what to check on a notice of assessment.
