Anaïs can stop accepting photography bookings. Her business will not automatically stop sending emails, needing edits or asking where the spare battery went.
Planning parental leave means deciding how much work she will actually do, as well as estimating what she will earn. For a self-employed Quebec resident, those are different questions under the Québec Parental Insurance Plan, or QPIP.
Check the business-time condition
For pregnancy or birth benefits, a self-employed applicant must stop business activities or reduce the time spent on them by at least 40%. The test is not a 40% fall in sales. Other conditions include at least $2,000 of insurable earnings in the qualifying period, contributions paid or owing, and Quebec residence both when benefits begin and on December 31 of the preceding calendar year. QPIP eligibility conditions.
In a simplified planning example, reducing a usual 40-hour business week to 24 hours is a 40% reduction. Anaïs includes editing, administration and customer messages in her working-time notes, not only hours behind the camera. That arithmetic helps her plan; it does not replace the program's assessment of her actual situation.
Use the right income year
For someone already operating a business, the qualifying period is normally the calendar year before the benefit period. A first year of business has a different rule: it is normally the year benefits begin. The application asks for the amount reported, or expected to be reported, on line 27 of Schedule L of the Quebec return.
That makes a sales total or a bank-deposit total the wrong shortcut. Anaïs prepares the business-income calculation and keeps the records supporting it. Someone with employment and self-employment income should provide both rather than choosing a category by instinct.
An estimated income can produce interim benefits. If the estimate is too high, the final calculation can lead to repayment. How QPIP determines the benefit amount.

The contribution and the application are separate
The Quebec return calculates any required QPIP contribution on self-employment income through Schedule R and line 439, subject to the applicable conditions. Paying that contribution does not submit a parental-benefit application. Revenu Québec's line 439 instructions.
Prepare the benefits application ahead of time. It can be submitted no earlier than the Sunday of the week payments are to begin. The current rules allow up to six earlier weeks without justification; waiting longer can mean some weeks are not granted. Applying for benefits.
Anaïs keeps a small leave file: proposed start date, normal and reduced work schedule, business-income calculation, residence information and application confirmation. Her camera bag is already heavy enough without becoming the filing cabinet.
Report income during the benefit weeks
Net business income earned or received during benefit weeks must be reported promptly. Benefits can be reduced depending on the amounts; a quiet booking calendar does not settle how a later payment should be treated. Where the work date, invoice date and payment date differ, ask QPIP how to report the particular amount instead of assigning it to a convenient week. Income while receiving benefits.
Keep the leave file current when work resumes. Later, if childcare arrangements change, the Quebec childcare-credit advance payments need their own update.
