You do not necessarily have to wait until your first Canadian tax return to apply for CRA benefits. Eligible newcomers can use the appropriate application process after becoming resident for tax purposes.
Eligibility still depends on the particular program, including family circumstances and any relevant immigration-status requirements. Being new to Canada does not guarantee every benefit.
Choose the application that matches the household
The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026. The CRA provides a newcomer application route, including Form RC151, for eligible new residents. Only one household application is needed for that benefit.
If you are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit, the RC66 application and required newcomer status and income information can also be used to determine eligibility for the groceries and essentials benefit. Check the current instructions for RC66SCH and supporting documents rather than submitting overlapping applications without understanding their purpose.
Prepare the requested periods of income
Applications can require world income for specified periods before arrival, along with spouse or common-law partner information. Follow the periods on the current form. Do not substitute the current month's Canadian earnings for a requested prior-year household figure.
Keep the calculation in Canadian dollars with the source records and conversion method. Providing income for benefit calculations does not, by itself, mean that all of it is taxable on the first Canadian return.
Keep the application and annual filing connected
Retain the submitted application, supporting documents and confirmation. Respond to requests for missing information and report changes to family status, custody, address or residency as required.
After the first year, annual tax filing by both partners generally supports continued benefit calculations, even where one has no income. The initial application does not replace those returns.
Read the benefit notice when it arrives and compare its household facts and income period with your file. That is a more reliable basis for budgeting than assuming the maximum advertised amount will apply.
