A first Canadian return needs more than a total of Canadian pay slips. Once the tax-residency date is established, divide the year into the resident and non-resident periods and identify income by type and source.
That structure prevents two opposite mistakes: omitting foreign income that must be reported and assuming every pre-arrival foreign amount is taxable in Canada.
Identify income for each period
For the resident portion of the year, Canadian reporting generally includes income from sources worldwide, converted to Canadian dollars. Leaving the money in a foreign account does not remove that reporting obligation.
For the non-resident portion, certain Canadian-source income can still be reportable. The statement "nothing before arrival counts" is therefore too broad. Treaty provisions and the nature of the income can affect the result.
A practical worksheet can have columns for income type, country, period, gross foreign amount, conversion method and foreign tax. Keep salary, interest, rent and pension amounts separate because their reporting and treaty treatment may differ.
Distinguish information from taxable income
Pre-residency world income can be requested to calculate certain credits or benefits even when it is not included as ordinary taxable foreign income on the Canadian return. A spouse's world income may also be needed.
Do not enter zero merely because no Canadian tax slip exists. Equally, do not add an informational amount to taxable income a second time without checking the field's purpose.
Reconcile foreign tax separately
Income taxed abroad may qualify for treaty relief or a foreign tax credit under the applicable rules. That does not justify reporting only the net bank deposit. Keep evidence of the gross income, foreign tax and relevant foreign assessment.
The goal is one consistent file supporting the Canadian return and benefit information. If the two countries use different tax years, retain the underlying monthly or transaction records so calendar-year amounts can be established accurately.
