Mail forwarding can help an envelope reach you. It does not replace updating the address CRA holds for your tax and benefit records.
Update the address and keep the date
In your CRA account, open Individual account / My Account, then Profile, Contact information, Edit. Enter the new address and submit. CRA says an online change takes effect immediately. Distinguish your home address from a different mailing address where applicable; keep the move date and confirmation.
If an old phone number prevents you from receiving the sign-in code, use the phone option below. CRA's address-change instructions.
If you cannot update it online
- By phone: call 1-800-959-8281 from Ontario, Quebec or elsewhere in Canada and the U.S. outside the territories. Have your SIN, name, birth date, complete address and an assessed return or other tax document ready. CRA lists same-day processing. Its official page has alternative numbers for the territories, overseas callers and accessibility services.
- By mail: complete Form RC325 and send it to the address on the form. CRA lists 4 to 6 weeks after receipt. Keep a copy and your mailing record.
Do not rely on NETFILE to change it
NETFILE cannot update your address. An EFILE return sent by an authorized preparer, or a paper return, can, but the update waits for processing. Change it promptly instead of waiting for filing season.
Check other contact details at the same time: an old phone number can affect account access, and an unused email address can prevent you from noticing new correspondence. Changing the mailing address is not the same as changing direct-deposit banking information.
For a move between provinces, retain the actual residence timeline for return preparation. The address currently used to receive mail should not be treated as a shortcut for every residency question on a past year's return.
Review related changes separately
A move can coincide with a relationship change, a new child-care arrangement or a change in business use of the home. Those facts may require their own update or tax review. Do not assume the address form communicates them all.
Check Service Canada and other government or financial accounts independently. The Government of Canada provides a directory of separate address-change processes. Government address-change directory.
Keep former leases, rent receipts and moving documents where relevant to a claim. An address update itself does not establish entitlement to moving-expense deductions or provincial benefits.
A useful checklist has one row per organization, the date submitted and confirmation received. It avoids repeating an update for one account while forgetting another.
Checked October 27, 2026. See work-related moving expenses for the separate deduction question.
