Maya pays the daycare invoice from her bank account. Her partner has the lower net income. When they gather their tax documents, she assumes the deduction follows the name on the receipt.
For the federal child care deduction, the general rule for a couple points instead to the person with the lower net income, including zero income. Who paid is part of the evidence, but not the only test.
Establish why the care was needed
The child care deduction concerns eligible care that allowed the taxpayer or supporting person to carry out qualifying activities, such as employment, business or an eligible educational program. Not every child-related payment is a care expense.
Maya separates daycare from school tuition, ordinary family outings and other purchases. A camp or program needs its own eligibility check; the word "children" on an invoice is not enough.
Use the family facts and T778
Form T778 calculates the claim using the applicable limits, income and circumstances. Exceptions can allow a higher-income spouse to claim in specified situations, including certain periods of study or incapacity. The couple cannot simply assign the deduction to whoever faces the higher tax bill.
If there has been separation, shared custody or a change in who supports the child, the period and actual arrangements need review. A previous year's answer may no longer fit.
Collect a usable receipt
Keep the provider's details, child and service period, amounts paid and proof of payment. An individual care provider's receipt needs their social insurance number; obtain and store that information securely. Compare subsidies and reimbursements with the gross invoice before calculating the eligible amount.
Maya and her partner prepare one shared list, then use it consistently on the relevant return. They retain the T778 calculation with the receipts so the claimed amount can be explained without reconstructing a year of e-transfers.
Quebec's provincial credit is a separate calculation
The federal T778 rule does not decide how spouses allocate Quebec's childcare credit. Quebec uses Schedule C and allows spouses to choose an allocation under its provincial rules. Each completes the required schedule and accounts for the other's claim. Revenu Québec's childcare-credit instructions.
Advance payments add another step: the recipient must reconcile the RL-19 amount with the provincial credit actually calculated. Keep the federal deduction and provincial credit calculations identifiable in the shared file. See Quebec childcare advances and the year-end reconciliation.
