The pension arrived without a tax deduction

Estimate the tax on all retirement income, then decide whether to request deductions from CPP or OAS payments.

Étienne starts receiving CPP while continuing some paid work. The monthly deposit arrives without the tax deduction he was used to seeing on a paycheque. He treats the whole payment as available spending money.

For a Canadian resident, CPP retirement benefits are taxable even when no income tax is withheld from the monthly payment.

Add the income sources together

Étienne lists the year's wages, CPP, employer pension, registered-plan withdrawals and other taxable income. He records tax already deducted beside each source.

The question is whether the combined deductions are enough for the estimated annual bill. A payer handling only one income stream cannot necessarily account for everything else.

He distinguishes gross income, tax withheld and cash deposited. Those three figures explain more than the bank balance alone.

Request deductions when useful

Service Canada allows voluntary federal income tax deductions from CPP and OAS payments. Requests or changes can be made through the available My Service Canada Account options, by the designated form or by contacting Service Canada.

A request to deduct $100 from each of six remaining monthly payments would prepay $600, once effective. That changes cash flow and tax already paid; it does not reduce the underlying taxable pension by $600.

Check the first payment after the change rather than assuming the request took effect immediately.

Revisit the estimate after a change

Stopping work, beginning a RRIF withdrawal or receiving a large one-time payment can alter the result. Save the deduction request and update the annual estimate when the income mix changes.

At filing time, reconcile the tax slips with the records and claim the reported tax deducted. Voluntary withholding can help avoid a surprise balance, but the return still determines the final amount.

Non-resident withholding follows different rules and needs a separate review.
