Maya helps her mother every week. Does the caregiver credit apply?

Check dependence due to infirmity, the supported person's income and other claims before entering a caregiver amount.

Maya buys groceries for her mother, helps with bills and drives her to appointments. A neighbour mentions the Canada caregiver credit. Maya starts by listing the support she actually provides and why her mother depends on it.

Helping an older relative does not automatically establish eligibility. The credit concerns qualifying support connected with a mental or physical infirmity.

Identify the relationship and dependence

The rules cover specified family relationships. Dependence generally involves regular and consistent reliance on the supporter for basic necessities such as food, shelter or clothing.

Maya records the support, her mother's circumstances and the relevant period. Age alone is not the qualifying condition. Some relationships also have Canadian-residency requirements, so a payment to a relative abroad needs careful review rather than an assumed claim.

Use the right calculation

The available amount depends on the relationship, the dependant's net income, the claimant's circumstances and other credits claimed for that person. Different lines apply to spouses, eligible dependants, children and other adult relatives.

If Maya's sibling also provides support, they compare their proposed claims. Shared support does not mean each person can independently claim the full maximum. Schedule 5 and the applicable line instructions help establish the permitted calculation and any allocation.

For example, suppose both siblings qualify for a line 30450 claim for their mother, no one claims a conflicting spouse or eligible-dependant amount for her, and the 2025 calculation after considering her income allows the full $8,601. They could allocate $5,000 to Maya and $3,601 to her sibling. They cannot each enter $8,601. If their mother's income reduces the allowable amount, the combined allocation must shrink too. CRA's line 30450 calculation and sharing rules.

Keep medical and financial support evidence

The CRA may request a medical practitioner's statement describing when the infirmity began and its expected duration. An approved T2201 for the relevant period can remove the need for that separate statement, but the caregiver claim still has other conditions.

Maya keeps the support records, income information used and any medical confirmation together. She does not send the full file with the return unless required; she retains it for a possible review.

The credit is non-refundable. Its listed amount is a calculation input, not a reimbursement for every dollar Maya spent helping her mother.
